This is the question we field most often after “which zone?”. The honest answer is that neither is better — they suit different groups, and the zone you want often decides it for you.
Here is the straight comparison, with our current prices.

Quick answer
Travelling as a family or group of 4–6? Book a jeep. At INR 7,500 for the whole vehicle it works out cheaper per head, and you control the pace.
Travelling solo or as a couple? The canter at INR 2,500 per person is the economical choice.
Want to visit Dhikala? That decides it — Dhikala is served by canter.
Side-by-side
| Jeep safari | Canter safari | |
|---|---|---|
| Price | INR 7,500 per jeep (INR 6,000 in eco-tourism zones) | INR 2,500 per person |
| Sold as | Whole vehicle | Per seat |
| Capacity | Small group | 16 seats |
| Height | Lower, closer to the track | Higher, better over grassland |
| Flexibility | High — your group decides where to linger | Shared, fixed route and pace |
| Zones | Most zones | Dhikala |
| Best for | Families, photographers, small groups | Solo travellers, couples, large groups |
When to choose a jeep
A jeep is booked as a whole vehicle, so the price does not change whether two of you travel or five. For a family that almost always works out cheaper than per-seat pricing.
The bigger advantage is control. If a tiger is resting in cover and your group wants to wait twenty minutes, you can. On a shared canter, that decision belongs to sixteen people. Photographers in particular should book a jeep for this reason alone.
Jeeps also reach most zones, including Bijrani, Jhirna, Dhela and Garjiya.
When to choose a canter
The canter is the sensible choice in two situations. First, if you are travelling alone or as a couple — INR 2,500 each beats INR 7,500 for a vehicle you barely fill. Second, if you want Dhikala, because that is the vehicle that serves it.
Canters also sit noticeably higher than jeeps. Over Dhikala’s grassland and along the Ramganga reservoir, that extra height genuinely helps you see further.
The tradeoff is company. Sixteen people means more noise and less flexibility. If silence matters to you, take a jeep.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a jeep and canter safari in Jim Corbett?
A jeep is a small open 4×4 booked as a whole vehicle, giving you flexibility and access to most zones. A canter is a larger open truck with 16 seats, sold per person, and is the vehicle used for the Dhikala zone.
Which is cheaper, jeep or canter safari?
The canter is INR 2,500 per person, so it is cheaper for solo travellers or couples. A jeep is INR 7,500 for the whole vehicle, which works out cheaper for a family or group sharing it.
Can I do a Dhikala safari by jeep?
Dhikala is served by canter safari. If you want a jeep experience, other zones such as Bijrani, Jhirna, Dhela and Garjiya are jeep zones.
Is a canter safari good for wildlife viewing?
Yes. Canters sit higher than jeeps, which helps visibility over grassland. The tradeoff is that you share the vehicle with up to 15 other people, so it is less quiet and less flexible.
